Vehicle fire at Walmart prompts emergency response

Customers, employees, and emergency personnel responded quickly when a parked car at the Cornelia Walmart burst into smoke at around 10 p.m. on Saturday, August 16.

The car’s owner had just parked when smoke clouds began to rise from under the hood and eventually began to sparkle with fire. The drivers of parked cars in the vicinity hurried to move their cars. As the smoke grew thicker, one woman stopped her kids from crossing the crosswalk by the store’s front doors.

Walmart staff contacted 911 and hurried to warn customers away from the burning car.

Within minutes, emergency personnel mobilized, and several units showed up to protect the area. Firefighters stopped the flames from spreading farther by putting out the fire almost instantly.

No injuries had been recorded, according to an on-scene police officer.

Habersham has now inquired into the cause of the fire with the Cornelia Fire Marshal’s Office.
