ATHENS, GA. This year, the University of Georgia Performing Arts Center is celebrating its 30th anniversary with an incredible season that includes nearly 40 international artists, including Yo-Yo Ma, a world-renowned cellist.
We’re ecstatic! The Performing Arts Center’s director, Jeffrey Martin, expressed his excitement at the achievement. We are also happy to be able to make the contributions we do to the university and community.
With performances ranging from dance, theater, and global roots music to jazz and classical music, this season’s roster features 13 different countries as guest performers. Broadway icon Lea Salonga, the Paul Taylor Dance Company, Grammy-winning folk singer Rhiannon Giddens, violinist Augustin Hadelich, pianist Angela Hewitt, the Branford Marsalis Quartet, B la Fleck & The Flecktones, and Wynton Marsalis’ Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra are among the highlights.
Major orchestral performances will also take place during the season, such as Handel’s Messiah and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 performed by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Dreamers Circus, L’nasa, the Salzburg Marionette Theatre, Sheku and Isata Kanneh-Mason, Jordi Savall, Tenebrae, and Ballets Jazz Montr al.’s Dance Me: The Music of Leonard Cohen are some more notable international performances.
Yo-Yo Ma’s return for a special gala event on February 1st, where she will perform a solo recital in support of the Performing Arts Center, will be the focal point of the festivities.
According to Martin, his solo presentation will be extremely memorable. Yo-Yo Ma will be returning to Athens for the event. In 2012, he gave a performance in the Classic City.
