UCSD’s new overlook showcases ‘breathtaking beauty’ of La Jolla

The surroundings of the University of California, San Diego are renowned for their beauty.

The freshly opened Brian & Nancy Malk Sunset Overlook on its La Jolla campus offers an additional opportunity to enjoy it.

The overlook, which was finished last month, is located along La Jolla Shores Drive and offers accessible parking, seats, walking paths, and a picturesque viewing platform.

According to UCSD Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla, UC San Diego is a beloved destination that excels in a variety of areas, including cutting-edge research and education, creative health care, and thriving arts programs. It is also a site of spectacular natural beauty.

Locals Brian and Nancy Malk, who frequently drive by the location to enjoy the picturesque vistas, started the project.

As they drove past the shore, they observed that people would congregate to watch the sunset on the backs of trucks and along the pavement.

Later, Brian contacted the university and presented the idea as a place where people of all ages and abilities could securely and leisurely take in the breathtaking view.

According to Brian Malk, the UC San Diego team embraced the notion with enthusiasm. We both wanted this cherished view to be available to everyone.

Soon after, the university and the Malks started planning and designing the deck for the overlook.

Native, drought-tolerant flora abound in the area around the platform and pathway, and on-site signage demonstrates reverence for the land.

Signage acknowledging the area’s indigenous inhabitants includes a land acknowledgment because UC San Diego and the viewpoint are situated on the unceded territory of the Kumeyaay Nation.

Visitors who like to take in the vistas along La Jolla Shores can now access the viewpoint.

According to Khosla, we are appreciative of Nancy and Brian Malk’s thoughtful donation, which has produced a new area where campus and community members can safely and conveniently take in the breathtaking ocean vistas that have come to characterize our university’s essence.
