UCSD Health opens McGrath Outpatient Pavilion, first step in Hillcrest overhaul

UC San Diego HealthThe first significant step in renovating the 62-acre medical facility was the opening of the McGrath Outpatient Pavilion at its Hillcrest location on Monday.

The purpose of the 250,000-square-foot facility is to increase access to cancer, surgery, therapy, and diagnostic services.

In a statement, UCSD Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla said, “We are thrilled to open this new space, which reflects our dedication to advancing academic medicine, enabling us to educate, research, and serve our community with impact.”

It will enable the upcoming generation of medical leaders to develop, find, and provide high-quality, compassionate treatment. We are appreciative to the several community members and donors that made this initiative possible.

Price Philanthropies and the Price family contributed $10 million to create the Barbara Parker, MD, Breast Center and name it the Price Philanthropies Foundation Plaza, while Laurie McGrath and the McGrath Family Foundation donated $25 million to name the building.

The Health Sciences Board of Advisors, Irwin and the late Joan Jacobs, and Carol and Jeff Chang also supported the name of the Steven R. Garfin, MD, Orthopaedic Surgery Clinic.

More than only UC San Diego Health’s cutting-edge diagnostics and treatments inspired me to donate. Laurie McGrath, president of the McGrath Family Foundation, said, “The doctors and caregivers, as well as the whole experience of care, really touched me.” They provided my family with competent, compassionate, and caring guidance during their illness.

I wanted the same excellent care to be available to other members of the community. Making a gift that is assisting the health system in growing and providing safe, dependable, and high-quality healthcare to Hillcrest, a San Diego neighborhood that is increasingly in need of this specialized care, was satisfying.

According to a UCSD release, the facility has operating rooms, imaging tools, and suites for ambulatory surgery. Along with a suite of additional specializations and more space for Moores Cancer Center, it also includes a multispecialty cancer clinic, a breast center, an infusion clinic, and sophisticated radiation therapy.

UCSD Health CEO Patty Maysent stated, “This is our first major investment aimed at dramatically increasing access to our world-class cancer services.” With cutting-edge clinical trials, integrated, multidisciplinary care, and outstanding cancer treatment all under one roof, McGrath is a new model of excellence that provides the best care accessible today.

Additional features include a cashierless store and artwork commissioned from San Diego artists.

A new 1,850-space parking structure with an underground connection to the pavilion is part of the wider Hillcrest Medical Campus Redevelopment Project, of which the McGrath building is the first phase.

According to UCSD officials, the pavilion also has designated rest places for workers and physicians.

Large green areas, retail services, and workforce housing are planned for later stages of the project.
