Trump says ‘complete and total’ ceasefire agreed to by Iran and Israel

(States Newsroom) President Donald Trump announced on social media Monday that Israel and Iran have agreed to a ceasefire in their 12-day conflict.

He stated that the truce will take effect at midnight Eastern time.

Israel and Iran have absolutely agreed that there will be a complete and total ceasefire for 12 hours, after which the war will be deemed to be over. Trump wrote. Iran will officially begin the ceasefire, Israel will follow on the 12th hour, and the world will officially applaud the end of the 12-day war on the 24th hour. The opposing side will maintain its composure and respect throughout each CEASEFIRE.

“I would like to congratulate both countries, Israel and Iran, on having the stamina, courage, and intelligence to end what should be called THE 12 DAY WAR,” he added, assuming that everything goes according to plan, which it will. This war has the potential to last for years and wipe out the Middle East, but it hasn’t and never will!

Neither Iran nor Israel immediately provided confirmation.

The declaration was made just hours after Iran retaliated for weekend assault on nuclear facilities by firing missiles at a U.S. military installation in Qatar. Trump wrote that no one was hurt when the missiles were shot down.

Trump said that Iran had warned American authorities prior to the strike in an apparent attempt to reduce the number of victims, a de-escalation signal that Trump seemed willing to accept.

Trump wrote on Monday afternoon, “We expected Iran to respond to our obliteration of their nuclear facilities with a very weak response, which we have very effectively countered.” Since it was traveling in a nonthreatening direction, one of the fourteen missiles that were fired was released, while the other thirteen were knocked down. I’m happy to say that almost no damage was done and that no Americans were hurt.

Most significantly, they have finally let it all out, and maybe there won’t be any more hate. I would like to express my gratitude to Iran for providing us with advance notice, which allowed for the avoidance of fatalities and injuries. I will strongly urge Israel to follow suit, and perhaps Iran can now move forward toward peace and harmony in the region.

According to U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson, the Iranian counterattack was expected.

In a CNN social media video, the Louisiana Republican informed reporters in the Capitol that this was the expected reaction. Everything is going OK so far. There were no casualties.

No briefings in advance for Dems

U.S. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries stated at a press conference on Monday that it was unclear how damaged Iran’s nuclear program was after the U.S. bombed three major nuclear enrichment facilities on Saturday, despite Trump’s description of the destruction of Iranian nuclear facilities.

The Democrat from New York claimed that the White House had simply given him a courtesy call informing him that strikes were coming and that he had not been briefed by the administration prior to the operation.

According to him, Tuesday is set aside for a confidential briefing with the so-called Gang of Eight, which consists of the senior Intelligence Committee members in each chamber of Congress as well as the floor leaders of the Republican and Democratic parties.

Jeffries stated, “We don’t even know how effective the strike has been, and we haven’t seen any evidence to justify (the administration’s) offensive strike in Iran.” I have not seen any proof that the nuclear program was utterly destroyed, as Donald Trump has stated, and no information has been submitted to Congress to support that assertion. We’ll see what transpires during tomorrow’s secret briefing.

Jeffries was adamantly against Trump’s decision to intervene in the conflict between Israel and Iran without first winning congressional approval.

He did not, however, address whether the choice was an impeachable offense or whether he would back a bipartisan resolution that would limit the president’s ability to go to war with Iran.

According to him, both the House and the Senate must approve the use of military force that is offensive in nature. According to the Constitution, that is. Donald, it isn’t optional.

War powers resolution

Jeffries claimed not to have looked at the resolution supported by California Democrat Ro Khanna and Republican Thomas Massie of Kentucky. “The resolution cannot be forced to be considered immediately due to changes in the rules under the House GOP majority,” he stated.

Massies remarked on Monday. There were 57 House cosponsors of the measure.

Johnson declared that he wouldn’t back the resolution.

“I don’t think a war powers resolution is appropriate at this time,” Johnson added. Furthermore, I don’t believe it’s required.

Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, a Democrat from New York, and other Jeffries caucus members have called for Trump’s impeachment because to his use of armed force without congressional approval.

Jeffries said he would not seek impeachment as his first course of action if Democrats regained the majority in the 2026 midterm elections.

According to him, one strategy now being considered is to keep pressing the government to appear before the US Congress and convince the American people of the rationale behind this unusual action. That’s the first step. The second step is for the House floor to debate the war powers resolution, which ought to have already happened. After that, we’ll see where we stand.
