A house on Busha Street caught fire late Saturday, killing a Toccoa man.
The fire was reported to Stephens County 911 at approximately 10:49 p.m. on August 2. Toccoa Police, Stephens County EMS, Carnes Creek Fire Department, and Toccoa Fire Department emergency personnel arrived on the site.
According to officials, the front of the house was on fire when the first units arrived. After attacking the fire vigorously, firefighters started looking for people inside the house.
Firefighters found an unconscious male inside the burning building and removed him, said Stephens County Chief Deputy Coroner Lee Woody. After rushing him to Stephens County Hospital and starting life-saving procedures, EMS officials declared him dead not long after they arrived.
James O. Sanders, a 29-year-old Toccoa resident, has been confirmed as the victim. “The victim’s family is in our prayers and thoughts during this trying time,” Woody added.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the Toccoa Police Department, and the State incident Marshal’s Office are still looking into what caused the incident.
