Three additional inmates who escaped from a New Orleans jail earlier this month have been apprehended, Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill announced Monday. Two escapees remain at large.
Murrill confirmed on social media that inmate Lenton Vanburen had been apprehended in Baton Rouge. The Texas Department of Public Safety detained Leo Tate and Jermaine Donald in Walker County, Texas, according to Murrill’s previous report.
Vanburen was originally serving time for parole violations, felon possession of a firearm, and illegal weapon carrying, according to Murrill. Five persons were arrested and charged with accessory after the fact for assisting Vanburen, Louisiana State Police announced Monday evening.
Tate was originally incarcerated on accusations of burglary, felon possession of a firearm, and illegal weapon carrying. He also has a criminal record, including an attempted second-degree murder, according to the attorney general. Donald was arrested on counts of second-degree murder, aggravated violence, and felon in possession of a handgun.
Murrill said the three guys will now face additional charges linked to their escape.
The ten inmates broke out of the jail on May 16, and three were apprehended within 24 hours of their escape.
Surveillance video captured three inmates pushing open a cell door about 12:22 a.m. CDT on May 16 and breaching a wall behind the cell’s toilet. According to the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office, CCTV footage captured the convicts fleeing the building via a neighboring loading dock at 1 a.m.
The escape went unreported by the sheriff’s office until around 8:30 a.m. Friday. At the time of the breakout, no sheriff’s officer was assigned to the area where the convicts began their jailbreak.
At least 13 persons have been arrested in connection with the 10 inmates’ escape, including a jail maintenance worker who was accused of cutting off water to a cell used by the inmates during their escape by removing a toilet from the wall.
