Suspicious package left at Pendleton leads to full base shutdown

The Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton was completely shut down and many roads were closed for several hours on Wednesday after a man, who had reportedly been refused access, left a package at the main gate.

The Oceanside Police Department reports that the individual who tried to access the base early on Wednesday at the main gate near Harbor and San Rafael Dr. left the area after dropping a suspicious package just outside the gate.

According to base officials, all gates were closed as a precaution. The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office took over the investigation after the OPD initially reacted to the event.
