Thursday saw the arrest of a suspect in the Fourth of July stabbing death of a man close to Interstate 5.
Just after 10 a.m., authorities arrested 46-year-old Ruben Perez in the 3300 block of Midway Drive on suspicion of killing 46-year-old Jason Poindexter, according to San Diego police.
At around 1:30 a.m. Friday, patrol officers who were responding to a report of an attack discovered Poindexter injured just outside a homeless camp behind a Walmart store at Commercial and 21st streets in Logan Heights, according to Lt. Lou Maggi.

The man was taken by paramedics to a hospital, where medical professionals declared him deceased.
Before the police arrived, two individuals who were characterized as perhaps homeless were observed leaving the area separately: a skinny woman with her hair pulled back in a ponytail and a stocky bald male.

A 45-year-old suspect in the crime was taken into custody on Monday and taken to the Las Colinas women’s jail in Santee; however, the lieutenant stated that she has since been released pending additional investigation. Her identity has been kept secret.
Investigators identified Perez as Poindexter’s alleged killer, but police have not revealed any probable motivation for the murder.
