Storm brings lightning, hail to northern Georgia

Storms are cooling off North Georgia after days of deadly heat, but they also carry their own set of risks.

Around 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 25, a powerful line of thunderstorms with gusty winds, heavy rain, lightning, and hail moved into the area. One individual compared the dispersed hail as someone spilling a sack of frozen peas.

In certain parts of the county, Habersham emergency personnel reported potential wind gusts of up to 60 mph. As of 10 p.m., there are reports of downed power lines and trees, but no casualties have been reported.A sizable hail core can be seen in the storm line moving across northern Georgia in this mobile radar image.

Habersham and the neighboring communities are still under a Severe Thunderstorm Warning till 10:30 p.m. Until midnight, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in force.

Habersham is now keeping a careful eye on the weather and will keep updating its reports as necessary.
