Following the announcement of a resounding membership vote in favor of allowing the union bargaining team to declare an unfair labor practice strike, negotiations between the union representing approximately 12,000 Stater Bros. employees and the Southern California grocery store chain are set to resume on Wednesday.
There is no guarantee that a strike will occur just because a strike authorization vote is passed.
The workers’ union, United Food and Commercial Workers, stated that it is looking for livable pay, reasonably priced health benefits, a stable pension, and additional employees and improved working conditions to improve the customer experience.
Stater Bros. has been accused by the union of:
- unlawful surveillance of members who have been active in the contract campaign
- discrimination against members on the basis of their union support
- unlawful interrogation of members
- bypassing the unions and dealing directly with members about proposals under consideration in bargaining
- failure to provide information that the unions requested in preparation for collective-bargaining negotiations
The UFCW Stater Bros. Bargaining Committee said in a statement Friday announcing the outcome of the strike authorization vote that although the firm has evolved, we have never had to take an unfair labor practice strike vote at Stater Bros.

We have been pressing Stater Bros. for substantive answers to issues like understaffing, hazardous working conditions, and unjust compensation since March, but all we have witnessed is a disregard for our rights, which is reflected in these ULP allegations.
The number of votes was not disclosed.
We are excited to go back to the negotiation table and come to a deal that honors the worth and significance of our store partners, preserves the company’s long-term viability, and enables us to keep grocery costs stable for our customers, Stater Bros. said in a statement.
