Beginning on Saturday, Shark Summer will be back at the Birch Aquarium, giving visitors the chance to engage with sharks and rays while discovering the important role they play in the ecosystem.
Shark exploration stations, shark feedings, Sharks and Rays 101 presentations, and other events will be held at the Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego through August 10.
Shark Summer highlights Birch Aquarium’s collaboration with AZA SAFE Shark and Ray, which is centered around the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ July 14 Shark and Ray Awareness Day. According to a statement from the aquarium, the SAFE Shark and Ray program is an initiative of over 60 organizations around the country who are working together to prevent the extinction of the more than 1,200 species of sharks and rays that exist worldwide.
According to aquarist Brent Fish, Birch Aquarium is collaborating with the AZA SAFE Shark and Ray initiative to promote shark and ray conservation. To increase awareness of their significance and the dangers they face, we are showcasing this distinctive and varied collection of species.
