SDHS asks animal owners to protect pets during heat wave

The San Diego Humane Society is urging pet owners to keep their animal companions in mind as this week’s intense heat wave intensifies.

In a prediction update, the San Diego National Weather Service stated that Extreme Heat Warnings and Heat Advisories are in force for all areas except coastal areas on Thursday and Friday and will be in effect for at least part of today through Saturday.

The San Diego Humane Society has released a number of guidelines on how to take the best care of companion animals during a heat wave because the sun can burn some hairless types and the high temperatures and humidity can be particularly damaging to furry animals.

  • Always provide plenty of cool, clean water for your pet.

  • Leave your pets at home as much as possible.

  • Never leave your pet in a parked vehicle.

  • Be mindful of hot asphalt and keep walks to a minimum.

  • Avoid exercising your pet in hot, humid weather.

  • Remember that dogs can get sunburned too!

  • Always provide plenty of shade.

  • Keep your pet well groomed.

  • Use flea and tick prevention.

  • Be alert for the signs of heat stress:

heavy panting, glazed eyes, a rapid pulse, unsteadiness, a staggering gait, vomiting, or a deep red tongue. If you believe your pet is suffering from heat exhaustion, contact your veterinarian right away. It can kill quickly.

If you notice an animal stuck in a hot automobile, call SDHS at (619) 299-7012 or call your local police department.
