This weekend has plenty to offer, whether your interests lie in Latin American folk art, Tina Turner tributes, Padres games, or belly laughter. If you miss something, you can probably catch it the following day because there are so many activities spread over several days.
Mr. Boombastic himself, Shaggy, will play with the San Diego Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Steven Reineke, on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the Rady Shell at Jacobs Park as part of his Mr. Symphonic Tour. With tickets starting at $45, the Grammy Award winner will take audiences on a musical journey through Jamaican music, ranging from ska and mento to modern dancehall.
Simply The Best: The Music of Tina Turner will then be presented at the Rady Shell on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. by Tony Award winner Adrienne Warren, who played Tina Turner in the Broadway blockbuster Tina: The Tina Turner Musical. It’s likely worth the ticket fee just to dance to Proud Mary. The starting price for tickets is $54.
Speaking of dancing, the UC San Diego Epstein Family Amphitheater will host City Ballet of San Diego’s Ballet Under the Stars: The Next Generation on Stage on Friday, which will feature gifted up-and-coming performers. The pre-performance picnic starts at 7 p.m., and at 8 p.m., the ballet performance takes place outside. With an RSVP, public entry is free, but reserved seating is $30.
Starting at 10 a.m. on Friday, the Latin American Market in Old Town’s Bazaar del Mundo features handcrafted items based on real folk art. The Mata Ortiz Pottery Market, which features an old pottery technique known for the complexity of its hand-painted geometric and ancestral symbols, is part of the free three-day festival. In addition to seeing live performances by artists like Pedro and Diego Montao weaving wool rugs on a traditional pedal loom or Jacobo and Mar a ngeles creating alebrijes, visitors may meet master potter Jorge Quintana.
The 20th Annual San Diego FoundationArtWalk at Liberty Station’s Arts District is another opportunity to get creative. In addition to food, beverages, and live entertainment, over 175 artists will showcase their paintings, photographs, glass, ceramics, jewelry, and sculptures. Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. is the ticketed preview party. On Saturday and Sunday, the public can enter for free. The event features a KidsWalk area with engaging family activities and showcases both local and international talent, including a unique Artes de M xico presentation. On Saturday and Sunday, the gates open at 10 a.m.
With carnival rides, a corn hole competition, an off-road car exhibition, a kids’ power wheel race, a dog trick competition, a beer garden, and an abundance of food, the three-day Ramona Country Fair gets underway on Friday. On Saturday and Sunday, the fun begins at 4 p.m. at the Ramona Outdoor Community Center, located at 431 Aqua Lane, and lasts until 11 a.m. The special Banda Night on Sunday at 4 p.m. marks the finale of the weekend’s musical schedule. Although entry to the fair is free, ride tickets cost $20 for 24 people, and parking starts at $20.
