San Diego Plane Crash Kills Music Agent Dave Shapiro, 2 Others

SAN DIEGO — A small private plane crashed into a residential neighborhood early Thursday, killing at least three people including music talent agent Dave Shapiro, 42, and injuring eight others on the ground, authorities said.

Tragic Crash Details

The crash occurred around 3:47 a.m. when a Cessna 550 went down in the Murphy Canyon neighborhood, igniting cars and homes in its path. The fiery wreckage destroyed at least one home, damaged about 10 to 15 others, and set multiple vehicles ablaze.

  • Shapiro, owner of Sound Talent Group, was among the victims.
  • Daniel Williams, former drummer for metalcore band The Devil Wears Prada, was also confirmed dead.
  • The plane likely held between 8 and 10 people, but no survivors have been identified.
  • All injured were people on the ground, including residents displaced by the crash and jet fuel spill.

Assistant Fire Chief Dan Eddy described a massive debris field scattered throughout the neighborhood. Police Chief Scott Wahl said nearly 100 residents were forced to evacuate due to fuel spills and fire hazards, though officials hoped many could return by Thursday evening.

Community Reaction and Investigation

The crash shocked locals in a neighborhood known for housing military service members. Resident Christopher Moore described the scene as “horrifying,” recalling the thick smoke and flaming cars.

Authorities have not yet determined the exact cause but are investigating a possible collision with a power line. The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the inquiry.

Flight records show the plane originated in Teterboro, New Jersey, made a fueling stop in Wichita, Kansas, and was headed to Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport in San Diego.
