Artist Kate Joiner will exhibit her work at this weekend’s Liberty Station ArtWalk, drawing inspiration from her greatest motivation—the city of San Diego.
Joiner’s work will be on display alongside pieces by over 175 other artists during the festival, which is scheduled to take place from Friday, August 1 to Sunday, August 3. Joiner, a mother from the area, is well-known for her works that highlight the cherished towns and neighborhoods of San Diego.
The many facets of this place’s history, culture, and natural beauty never cease to excite me, Joiner added. I’m fascinated by how the city keeps evolving and changing, whether I’m strolling down the shore, looking around the city, or thinking back on its history. I enjoy documenting these moments, both past and present, and reinterpreting them in a modern way while honoring my favorite city’s always changing terrain.
Joiner, a graduate of San Diego State, claimed that her old professor Janet Cooling encouraged her to include an intimate, reflective component in her writing.
According to Joiner, “I painted constantly, over and over, until my own style started to emerge.” This is how my method evolved. As I spent more time at the easel, I became more aware of my preferences, including the paint type I use, the brushes that are comfortable for me, and the colors that I am drawn to.
Visitors may anticipate artists showcasing their sculpture, jewelry, glass and ceramics, and photography in addition to acrylic pieces. There will also be a KidsWalk with a range of interactive art experiences and activities for families.

San Diego’s top destination for food, entertainment, museums, and the arts is the ARTS DISTRICT at Liberty Station. Although admittance is free, there will be a perimeter fence around the venue. Instead of having to stay in a beer garden, the fence lets guests enjoy wine and beer (for those 21 and up) while walking about the event. In order to purchase alcoholic beverages, guests must present identification in order to obtain a wristband.
The VIPPreview pARTy will take place on Friday, August 1 from 5 to 8 p.m., on Saturday, August 2, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and on Sunday, August 3, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. On Saturday and Sunday, parking and attendance are free.
