San Diego federal judges vote to extend Adam Gordon as region’s U.S. attorney

According to the local court, federal justices in San Diego have voted to name Adam Gordon as the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of California, which is located downtown, meeting a 4-month deadline.

The U.S. District Court clerk here verified a report initially published by a legal daily on Tuesday.

John Morrill, the clerk, told the Times of San Diego that the judges had decided to choose Adam Gordon as the acting U.S. attorney. Prior to the term ending on August 7, an appointment order will be submitted.

Later, Morrill added: The vote was held yesterday, as stated in the article in the Daily Journal. I’m not able to give you any more information on this.

Chief Judge Cynthia A. Bashant verified the judges’ vote over the phone Monday afternoon, according to the Los Angeles-based Daily Journal on Tuesday. She noted that last week, the Trump administration requested that they name Gordon to the role.

A spokesperson for the San Diego DOJ office, Logan Manning, stated in an email on Tuesday that he was looking for clarity.

Gordon was appointed by U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi on April 10 to a 120-day term that ended on August 7.

Gordon will continue to serve as the top federal law enforcement official unless President Donald Trump fires him or a U.S. attorney nominee is confirmed by the U.S. Senate, according to a Craig Anderson piece in The Daily Journal.

Gordon, a 44-year-old former deputy district attorney for San Diego County from 2009 to 2014, applied to be appointed interim district attorney by the county Board of Supervisors in 2017 to replace Bonnie Dumanis, who was departing.

Gordon, who joined the local U.S. Attorney’s Office in 2019, has not held a supervisory position, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. However, until recently, he was the opioid coordinator, which includes spearheading prosecutions of fentanyl dealers whose goods caused overdose deaths.

According to opensecrets.org, Gordon, a Trump supporter, also donated $1,200 to the 2020 Golden State Delegation, a conservative political action group, and $250 to Texas Sen. Ted Cruz in June 2024.

Gordon, who is 6-foot-2, 205 pounds, and from Rancho Santa Fe, graduated from Harvard University in 2004. He played wide receiver for the school’s varsity football team. He attended the esteemed Groton School in Massachusetts for his high school education.

According to a profile on the website of his former firm, downtown-based Seltzer Caplan McMahon Vitek, he received the Patrick C. Melendez Award and the Francis H. Burr Scholarship Prize for his efforts as a [Harvard] student-athlete.

His areas of expertise at Seltzer were White Collar Criminal Defense/Government Investigations and litigation.
