San Diego comics vets and upstarts share space on Comic-Con floor

While a new upstart supported by some industry titans is making an impression, two local businesses are returning to Comic-Con with new comics and books.

Printers Row Publishing Group is exhibiting a range of new books at its booth for the third year. Since its founding in 1992, the Sorrento Valley-based company has released over 800 books.

Printers Row is marketing a Stranger Things book at Comic-Con this year. The book will be released in conjunction with the popular Netflix series’ fall return. A Lilo & Stitch color-by-numbers book is also brand-new. Additionally, some book covers are using a new technique called platinum relief that gives the impression of three dimensions.

Peter Norton, publisher and vice president of Printers Row, said that going to Comic-Con for the third consecutive year has facilitated direct communication between the company and its customers.

“We’re learning and living,” Norton remarked.

Magma Comix, on the other hand, made their debut at the Con last year and returned this year with a stand on the convention floor and a panel promoting their work.

Officials from the company revealed that they had partnered with Heavy Metal magazine, which will result in the publication of their strips. The studio was also ecstatic after one of its pieces, The Pedestrian, received a nomination for Best New Series at the annual Eisner Awards, which are hosted at Comic-Con every year and are the industry’s equivalent of the Oscars.

“Being nominated is a huge honor,” founder Denton Tipton remarked.

The newest company in San Diego’s comics sector, Clover Press, was located at the far end of the convention floor.

Ted Adams and Robbie Robbins, two former executives at IDW Publishing, which was formerly based at Liberty Station, founded Clover.

Due to the worldwide epidemic, Clover, which has a modest headquarters in Mira Mesa, was unable to start in 2019. They published a wide range of publications, including horror and fantasy, when they officially began in March 2022.

More than 75 books have been produced by the company to date, including pieces by international artists from Brazil, Taiwan, and Korea.

Hank Kanalz, the author of Clover, stated, “We publish books we like.”

This year marks Clover Press’s debut appearance at Comic-Con. The comics industry has been headquartered in New York City for many years, according to Kanalz. However, a lot of talent is drawn to San Diego.

According to Kanalz, living in San Diego is a very enjoyable experience. There are numerous publishers between San Diego and Los Angeles.
