Reminder: Caltrans to close southernmost U.S. exit through Monday morning

Before crossing into Mexico overnight, Caltrans is warning drivers that it intends to close the I-5’s southernmost exit.

As part of infrastructure upgrades, the Camino de la Plaza exit will close on Sunday at 9 p.m. for pipe installation. It will reopen on Monday at 6 a.m.

According to Caltrans, anyone heading south on the I-5 close to the border who does not want to enter Mexico will have to use the Via de San Ysidro Boulevard exit, turn right, then left onto Calle Primera, and then continue on Willow Road toward Camino de la Plaza.

After Camino de la Plaza, there is no way out. According to the organization, drivers who fail to leave in a timely manner will be rerouted into Mexico.

Please make plans, factor in additional travel time, and, if at all possible, take detours.

To warn drivers, signs will be erected before to the closure.

To protect crews and the general public’s safety, the work will be done at night while temporary interstate lane closures are in place.

During the activity, nearby businesses and residences should anticipate additional traffic on the diversion route, construction noise, lights, and OSHA-mandated vehicle backup alarms.
