Port temporarily closes pier, restrooms at Pepper Park for renovations

Due to ongoing park upgrades, Pepper Park’s toilets and fishing pier will be closed starting Monday for a few weeks.

During the closure, park visitors will have access to portable facilities. Reopening of the restrooms is planned for August 11. According to the Port of San Diego, signs at the pier will point tourists to the next closest fishing piers.

The playground closure, which started on July 23, is in addition to these closures. On August 15, the green area in the park’s northwest section will also be closed.

When the 5.2-acre park’s renovations are finished, it will have the first splash pad in a port park. A playground with a pirate motif, a perched beach, an overlook, a hillside play area, a picnic area, a new entrance plaza, landscaping, and lighting will also be included.

The $8 million initiative, according to the port, is financed by a combination of federal, state, and port funding, including $250,000 from port tenant Austal USA and $4.35 million from California’s Coronavirus Fiscal Recovery Fund and the American Rescue Plan Act.

While renovation is underway, the boat launch ramp is still accessible. Early 2026 is when Pepper Park is expected to reopen.

According to a port statement, a future 2.5-acre park extension is planned whenever additional cash becomes available and other approvals are finalized.

A new nature play area, a longer seaside promenade, bigger grass and picnic spaces, more parking, a plaza, and other enhancements are planned for the expanded park.
