The Port of San Diego’s Blue Economy Incubator has approved the latest company, VoltSafe Inc., an electrification startup, to launch a one-year trial project on Wednesday.
VoltSafe, the 12th project to be launched through the incubator, was approved by the Board of Port Commissioners on Tuesday. The port awarded the company $250,000 for their smart marina technology and marina shore power.
According to Danielle Moore, chair of the port board, innovation is driven by individuals who have the foresight, imagination, and guts to question the current quo.
The Port of San Diego is pleased to assist innovative businesspeople who are transforming audacious concepts into practical solutions and building a more sustainable waterfront for everybody through our Blue Economy Incubator.
In order to attract sustainable ocean-based technology businesses to San Diego, the port launched the BEI in 2016.

According to a port statement, VoltSafe’s new shore power system, which does away with the conventional pronged connector and substitutes a magnetic connection, aims to make the port’s marinas safer and more effective.
The goal of the magnetic technique is to lessen the possibility of corrosion, electrical shocks, and other risks associated with electricity and water interaction. It also includes software that provides marina owners with a real-time view of power usage and requests at each slip.
Trevor Burgess, the CEO and cofounder of VoltSafe, stated that, “The Port of San Diego’s Blue Economy Incubator is a global first, and partnering with them signals more than a milestone, it’s proof that VoltSafe’s patented shore power hardware and [Software as a Service] platform isn’t just raising the bar, it’s rewriting the standard.”

Out of the twelve pilot projects included in the BEI, four have been finished.
The port earns royalties from the company’s operations or technology in return for loans or in-kind assistance given to start the pilot projects. Since the incubator’s inception, $2.35 million has been pledged to investment.
