On Wednesday, two prisoners serving life terms for well-known crimes in San Diego County were refused parole.
The Del Mar Rapist, Robert Dean Rustad, is incarcerated for 326 years to life for raping several women between 1992 and 1996.
Due to changes in state legislation, Rustad, Aerith Asora, who was found guilty, and sister Brae Hansen were eligible for early parole hearings for their roles in the murder of stepfather and local lawyer Timothy MacNeil.
These revisions to the statute changed the eligibility for parole for prisoners who were under 25 at the time of the offense, as well as those who are 50 years of age or older and have served at least 20 years.
The release of both prisoners was opposed by the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office.

Asora received a five-year parole denial on Wednesday, while Rustad received a three-year denial.
Rustad, who was between the ages of 19 and 22, is no longer eligible for juvenile parole after it was rejected to him last year.
Rustad, who is 51 years old and has served more than 20 years in prison, was granted a hearing on Wednesday in accordance with the elder parole rule.
He broke into the houses of seven women, raped or sexually attacked six of them, and some of the victims were tied up and threatened with knives, according to the prosecution.

Because Asora was 19 years old at the time of the crime, she was granted an expedited parole hearing under the young parole law, despite receiving a sentence of 25 years to life in prison.
Asora, formerly known as Nathan Gann, and Hansen, according to the prosecution, staged their stepfather’s 2007 murder as a home invasion robbery. MacNeil was shot four times by Asora at their home in Rolando Village. Earlier this year, Hansen was refused parole.
