The Padres defeated the Boston Red Sox 6-2 on Sunday to win two of three games. Dylan Cease was outstanding for six innings before San Diego’s All-Star-laden bullpen got into and out of trouble in the seventh.
As they continue to pursue the Los Angeles Dodgers, the reigning World Series champions, in the NL West, the Padres have won 11 of their last 14 games.
Cease (5-10) walked Jarren Duran and gave up a single to Trevor Story before cruising into the seventh inning with a shutout on just three singles and a walk.
All-Star Jason Adam entered the game and loaded the bases by hitting Masataka Yoshida with his first pitch. Shortstop Xander Bogaerts then made a fielder error on Romy Gonzalez’s possible double-play grounder, which resulted in two runs being scored. Adam struck out pinch hitter Abraham Toro and Ceddanne Rafaela after Wilyer Abreu singled to load the bases once more.
