Tuesday in Atlanta, but the real fun came with a first-of-its kind tiebreaker.
With the score tied 6-6 after nine innings, the winner was decided by the first All-Star Game “swing-off” – and the National League prevailed.
Under the “swing-off” – a sort-of mini-home run derby – three players designated by the manager of each side received three swings of the bat. The team that hit the most homers would the game.
No
Padres
served as designated hitters for the swing-off, but the NL still won when players hit a combined four homers – including three by the Phillies’ Kyle Schwarber, who ended up as the game’s MVP – compared to three for the AL.
Regarding Tatis, the three-time All-Star was walked in the sixth inning, then stole second on a pitch and made it to third when the Cardinals’ Brendan Donovan singled on a ground ball. He scored thanks to a homer by Met Pete Alonso.
Tatis, Jr. struck out in the seventh and ninth, but also caught a lineout and flyout in the eighth inning.

It was a quiet game for seven-time All-Star Manny Machado, who batted fifth as a starter; he struck out in the first and fourth innings, then was done for the night.

Pitcher Adrian Morejon, playing in his first All-Star Game, came in for the NL in the seventh, but he didn’t have a long stint. After giving up a single and a walk, manager Dave Roberts pulled him in favor of Randy Rodríguez of division rival San Francisco.
Pitcher Robert Suárez, making his second consecutive ASG appearance, came into the game in the ninth with the NL leading 6-4, but immediately gave up two doubles and was pulled.
Pitcher Jason Adam, also playing in his first All-Star Game, made a brief appearance in the second inning, striking out one batter.
