The Central District lifeguards from San Diego won this year’s annual San Diego Lifeguard Relays.
Last week, the San Diego Lifeguard Services hosted a tournament to exhibit the talents of rescues from several districts.
The Boating Safety Unit and competitors from the Northern and Southern districts trailed the Central District.
The event, which is officially called the Ron Trenton Memorial Lifeguard Relays, showcases the numerous methods utilized in maritime rescues by incorporating activities such as running, swimming, paddleboarding, and landline rescue.
The four service districts—Southern (Ocean Beach), Central (Mission Beach and Pacific Beach), Northern (La Jolla beaches), and the Boating Safety Unit (Mission Bay)—compete in the relays.

The contest encourages lifeguards, builds team spirit, and gives the public a chance to witness them in action.
Although the relays have been held annually since 1953, the event is named in honor of Trenton, a longtime lifeguard and captain of the Northern District squad who passed away in 1997.
