The idea that San Diego is America’s Finest City is legitimate. However, we must continue to look for methods to make our community better if we want it to remain in that position.
A recent Times of San Diego article described how showers that were provided for homeless people to use have had a profoundly positive impact on the people who have had the opportunity to utilize them. For the city as a whole, as well as for those who would not otherwise have a place to take a shower, it is a fantastic development.
However, there is still opportunity for improvement. The constant urine smell coming from the Civic Center Plaza’s C Street side is one of my pet peeves. There must be methods for cleaning it more often and completely.
More importantly, we should install public restrooms in areas with high homeless populations so that they don’t have to urinate on the streets. Cities including Kansas City, Milwaukee, Richmond, San Francisco, and Salt Lake City have all taken this action.
San Diego is regrettably not near the top of the national ranking of cities with the best public restrooms.

San Diego should have these facilities for reasons more than just getting rid of the pee stink from our Civic Plaza and the streets in general. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you is the Golden Rule, which should be adhered to by any city that aspires to be named America’s Finest City.
Almost all ethical standards and religions adhere to this principle. We owe this to our fellow citizens, particularly to those who are homeless and frequently suffer from mental illness.
