NGMC Habersham earns national emergency care award

The Emergency Nurses Association has presented the esteemed Lantern Award to Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC) Habersham.

Northeast Georgia Health organization (NGHS) is now the first healthcare organization in Georgia to have five facilities recognized for their exceptional emergency care capabilities.

Emergency departments that exhibit outstanding and creative performance in leadership, practice, education, advocacy, and research are honored with the Lantern Award. The accolade has now been given to NGMC Habersham, joining NGMC Gainesville, Braselton, Barrow, and Lumpkin.

According to Walt Wiley, executive director for Emergency, Trauma, Observation, and EMS Services at NGHS, this honor indicates that individuals in our community may rest comfortable knowing that their local hospital offers exceptional emergency care. It also honors the exceptional commitment of our doctors, nurses, and staff, who put in countless hours every day to deliver life-saving care in every community we serve.

NGHS now provides a handy online tool with anticipated wait times at each of its hospitals for people in need of emergency medical care.

“We want to make the experience as easy and efficient as possible, even though nobody wants to be in an emergency,” Wiley stated. We’re giving patients the information they need to make the greatest care decisions by making wait times available online.

The wait times are estimates, according to an NGHS spokeswoman, because patients with life-threatening conditions are given priority over those with less urgent needs.

The severity of the emergency and the needs of the patient may affect the actual wait durations.
