New Helen boundary lines approved

White County and the City of Helen have achieved an intergovernmental agreement to update the city’s boundary map.

White County Manager Derick Canupp stated at the July 7 county commission meeting that there have been some discrepancies over the precise location of the boundary lines for a while, which has led to issues with service delivery.

The specifics that will settle the boundary lines under the current agreement have been worked up by county employees in collaboration with the lawyers for both parties.

According to Canupp, in order to finalize the agreement, they referred back to the city of Helen’s original charter, located the town center, redrawn the half-mile radius around the town, and then included the regions that had been annexed throughout time. According to Canupp, the agreement will streamline services and eliminate some inconsistencies.

The City of Helen will submit a couple of fresh annexation requests to the county now that the new border line has been established, which will need another map redraw. This information was disclosed during the meeting.
