The Padres have acquired pitchers and a catcher in two trades since the Major League Baseball trade deadline, which is this Thursday at 3 p.m.
Padres send a slew of prospects to A s for two major league pitchers
The Padres acquired A.S. standout reliever Mason Miller and starter JP Sears in general manager A.J. Preller’s first deal Thursday in exchange for 18-year-old shortstop Leo De Vries, the third-ranked baseball prospect, and three other prospects.
According to the MLB’s top 30 prospects list, De Vries is expected to make his MLB debut in 2027. In 2022, the Padres signed their current shortstop, Xander Bogaerts, to an 11-year, $280 million contract.
The Padres acquired 26-year-old righty Miller, who finished the season as the A’s closer with a 3.76 ERA and 59 strikeouts in 38 1/3 innings, in exchange for De Vries.It is unclear if Miller will replaceRobert Suarez, the team s current closer who was selected as an All-Star the past two years.Suarez leads the league with 30 saves, has a 3.43 ERA, and has struck out 47 batters in 44 2/3 innings this season.
JP Sears, a 29-year-old southpaw with a 4.95 ERA and a 7-9 record in 22 starts this season, will also be joining the Padres.
This season, Sears has tossed slightly more than five innings per start on average.
The Padres sent three right-handed pitching prospects to the A’s in the transaction; according to MLB, these prospects were ranked third, thirteenth, and seventeenth in the organization.
Padres also acquire Kansas City catcher for two starters
Just before noon, ESPN reporter Jeff Passan announced on X that the Padres had acquired Kansas City Royals catcher Freddy Fermn in exchange for right-handed pitchers Steven Kolek and Ryan Bergert.
AJ Cassavell, the Padres’ beat reporter for MLB, claims that the transaction addressed what may have been their greatest vulnerability.This season’s Padres catchers, Martin Maldonado and Elias Diaz, with respective batting averages of.204 and.205.Ferm, 30, has a.268 average in 818 career plate tries and is batting.255 in 67 games this season.
The Royals received Bergert, 25, and Kolek, 28, in return for Ferm n.

In April, Bergert made his Padres major league debut as a reliever, allowing just one hit in his first four games. Bergert has started seven games since the beginning of May.This season, he has pitched 35 2/3 innings with a 2.78 ERA and a 1-0 record.In 14 starts this season, Kolek has a 4-5 record and an ERA of 4.18. He made his major league debut with the Padres last year.Kolek pitched a complete-game shutout against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field on May 10; the Padres won 21-0 despite Kolek giving up five hits.
A third trade near almost finalized, according to ESPN
According to ESPN s Jeff Passat at 1:28 p.m. Thursday, the Padres and Baltimore Orioles are finalizing a deal that would send Orioles outfielder Ramon Laureano and first baseman Ryan O Hearn to San Diego.
