The Gorilla According to zoo authorities on Monday, Paul Donn has become the first silverback to join the group at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park since the death of beloved Winston last year.
Another member of the troop is Jessica, a 44-year-old woman who has been living with Paul Donn, 36.
The addition of a silverback will improve the troop’s social dynamic, according to zoo officials. Paul Donn returns to the troop where he grew up with this move. Winston tolerated two unrelated males in his flock until they were close to reproductive age, which was unusual for a silverback.
Last summer, 52-year-old Winston, a western lowland gorilla, passed away due to age-related causes.

In gorilla tribes, the silverback, a male adult distinguished by the gray hair on his back, is the leader of the group and is in charge of family welfare, safety, and decision-making.
Paul Donn and Jessica’s move, according to officials, will enable the zoo to support bachelor gorillas.
The duo and the rest of the troop are visible to visitors in the Safari Park’s Gorilla Forest.
