Man rescued after falling into 75-foot well in North Habersham

Emergency crews from multiple counties pulled off a dramatic and successful rescue Sunday evening after a man fell into a 75-foot well in northern Habersham County.

The incident happened around 6:24 p.m. on June 1 at an unoccupied home on Arlo Todd Road. A woman called 911 to report her boyfriend had fallen through the floor of the structure and disappeared.

Habersham County Emergency Services responded quickly, dispatching multiple units to the scene. Given the complexity of the situation, they called in backup: the Rabun County Special Emergency Response Team and the Hall County High-Angle Emergency Response Team. Gainesville Fire’s Station 21 also brought in their Georgia Search and Rescue (GSAR) truck, which is part of a regional response network.

The Habersham County Sheriff’s Office assisted by clearing the road, allowing crews to work without obstruction.

Emergency teams spent roughly three hours on site, carefully coordinating the rescue. Once they reached the man, it took just 29 minutes to pull him out safely from the depths of the well. No responders were injured during the operation.

The man was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville with non-life-threatening injuries.

“We are incredibly grateful to the assisting agencies for their support,” said Habersham County Emergency Services Chief Jason Davey. “We could not have performed a safe rescue without the help of all the partner agencies who responded. It’s a testament to the strength and unity of our neighboring communities.”
