JCPenney Announces Closure of The Shops at Tanforan Location in California, Included 6 Others State

SAN BRUNO, Calif. — JCPenney has announced the impending closure of its store at The Shops at Tanforan in San Bruno, California, scheduled for Sunday, May 25, 2025.

This decision is part of a broader plan to shutter seven locations across the United States, reflecting the company’s ongoing efforts to adapt to changing market dynamics and consumer behaviors.

The San Bruno store, a longstanding anchor at The Shops at Tanforan, will cease operations alongside six other locations in Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, New Hampshire, North Carolina, and West Virginia. These closures are attributed to factors such as expiring leases and shifting market conditions, rather than the company’s recent merger with SPARC Group.

The full list of stores closing on May 25 includes:

  • The Shops at Tanforan – San Bruno, California
  • The Shops At Northfield – Denver, Colorado
  • Pine Ridge Mall – Pocatello, Idaho
  • West Ridge Mall – Topeka, Kansas
  • Fox Run Mall – Newington, New Hampshire
  • Asheville Mall – Asheville, North Carolina
  • Charleston Town Center – Charleston, West Virginia

Customers can take advantage of clearance sales offering significant discounts at these locations until the closing date.

The closure of the San Bruno store coincides with plans to redevelop The Shops at Tanforan into a biotech office campus, signaling a shift in the property’s use and the broader transformation of retail spaces in the area.

JCPenney continues to navigate the evolving retail landscape, focusing on strengthening its online presence and optimizing its store portfolio to better meet consumer needs.
