Jazz 88.3 hosts another California Cool Concert, highlights West Coast sound

On Tuesday night at the Handlery Hotel in Mission Valley, KSDS Jazz will offer another event in its California Cool Concert series, which will feature music that is rarely heard and rarely played live.

West Coast jazz is featured in the California Cool Concert series, which raises money for the station while providing San Diegans with an enjoyable event.

Gilbert Castellanos will conduct a musical homage to Clifford Brown and Chet Baker on Tuesday night. According to station manager Ken Poston, the performance will feature music by both artists that is not easily accessible to the general audience.

You won’t be able to view this next week or next year. According to Poston, you must go tomorrow night to witness it because, in theory, it won’t happen again unless we do it again.

In order to avoid stepping on the toes of other local live jazz events, KSDS Jazz constantly aims to make the event distinctive.

Whenever we organize an event, we attempt to think of something that will set it apart from the competition and make it special. Poston stated

Given the possibility of budget cuts to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, or CPB, fundraising is more crucial than ever for the San Diego Jazz station. Memberships and donations provide KSDS Jazz with the majority of its funding. However, the station frequently depends on a government grant from the CPB to cover financing shortfalls.

If the Senate approves, the CPB might lose a billion dollars in funding. Although the grant doesn’t make up a large portion of the station’s budget, it is still a sizable sum of money, so Poston said he is unsure how the possible cuts may impact the station.

“We do pretty well with our membership and with our fundraising events, so I think we’re in pretty good shape no matter what,” Poston said. Hopefully, if it does go away, it will only require organizing some more donations to make up for it.

Prior to the CPB facing budget cuts, the California Cool Concert series was organized.

Prior to recently, the station only ran two campaigns annually; now, it runs three. Poston stated that the station prefers to limit its campaigns to ten days or less, as opposed to weeks, as he has observed rival stations doing.

Events are also incorporated into membership plans by the station, and vice versa. Members receive unique access to events, special discounts, and membership perks upon joining. On the other hand, non-members who attend the event have the opportunity to join.

However, KSDS Jazz does not want to solely concentrate on fundraising.

Additionally, we can do things for the musicians and the community. According to Poston, the gatherings serve a variety of purposes and serve as radio station publicity.
