Hot cooking oil sparks house fire in Demorest

Emergency crews responded to a residential fire on Cap Fry Road Monday afternoon, June 2, at approximately 3:48 p.m. Heavy smoke was seen coming from the carport and front entrance of the home when first responders arrived.

The Demorest Fire Department was first on the scene and was soon joined by Habersham County Emergency Services. Crews from the Cornelia and Baldwin Fire Departments also provided support.

Firefighters entered the residence and quickly contained the fire to the kitchen and living room, stopping it from spreading further.

The county fire department says a homeowner had safely evacuated the home before crews arrived, and no injuries were reported.

According to the homeowner, the fire started from cooking oil left unattended on the stove.
