Hidden-ball trick backfires, but Padres still find way to win, 5-4

The Padres defeated the Red Sox 5–4 on Saturday after Ram iro Laureano doubled in Xander Bogaerts from second base with no outs in the 10th inning.

Laureano, acquired from Baltimore after the trade deadline, blasted a chopper off off Garrett Whitlock (5-2) over third baseman Alex Bregman into left field with runners on first and second and the infield drawn in.

What does Laureano think of his new teammates? The way of life? We’re all grinders. He stated in the Padres post-game interview that “everyone is a gamer and all we want to do is win a World Series.”

Bogaerts scored, and he had a great game against his old team. He walked, hit a home run, and had an RBI single.

When All-Star closer Robert Suarez brought in Ceddanne Rafaela with a ground-rule double in the ninth, Boston’s Roman Anthony knotted the score.

Earlier, the Friars capitalized on Red Sox starter Lucas Giolito’s breakdown in the fifth inning.

Giolito retired Machado and Luis Arreaz after allowing Fernando Tatis Jr. to hit the leadoff single with the Sox ahead 3-2. The following four hitters, though? Oh no.

He was lifted after walking all four, including Ryan O. Hearn and Ram n. Laureano, while the bases were loaded.

Giolito went to a full count against Laureano, walked Jackson Merrill on four consecutive pitches, and only threw one strike to Bogaerts and O Hearn. He walked six, struck out one, and gave up five hits and four runs.

After a cunning Manny Machado tried the hidden-ball trick in the top half of the inning, Bogaerts singled in Arraez with two outs in the third to bring the Padres within 3-2.

However, he was outwitted. After Alex Bregman was caught in a rundown on the previous play, Machado still had the ball when Jarren Duran took his lead off third base with one out. Machado tagged Duran, who gestured toward the mound, as reliever Wandy Peralta was on the rubber.

Boston took a 2-1 lead after Duran scored after third base umpire Scott Barry called a balk. Trevor Story went up to third place.

For a hidden-ball trick to be legal, the pitcher must not be on the rubber. A balk occurs when a runner is tagged by another player while the pitcher is on or straddling the rubber.

Story was then brought in with a grounder by Masataka Yoshida, making the score 3-1.

The Friars were still three games behind the Dodgers in the National League West after relief pitchers Jeremiah Estrada, Adrian Morejon, Mason Miller, Suarez, and Jason Adam (7-3) combined for 13 strikeouts from the fifth through tenth innings of the victory.

Before the Padres travel for important games, including a stop in Los Angeles, Dylan Cease (4-10, 4.60) and Brayan Bello (8-5, 3.03 ERA) of the Red Sox will start the series finale at 1:10 p.m. on Sunday.
