Every year, American military service veterans who have received the Purple Heart are honored by communities across the country. The medal honors individuals killed or injured in action and is the oldest military honor in our country.
Habersham County formally adopted the Purple Heart County title this year, joining the ranks of these communities. Local veterans organizations and state and local leaders honored Habersham’s Purple Heart veterans at a ceremony during the first public observance under this new designation. Certificates and folded flags were presented to almost five dozen area veterans, both alive and deceased.
These are the names of those warriors, some of whom have since been added to the list. Their sacrifice and devotion, along with that of their families, are now acknowledged and honored by Habersham. “If you spill blood, it’s an accident,” remarked Barry Church, post commander of Grant-Reeves VFW Post 7720, during the ceremony. These men sacrificed their lives.
