GBI investigating inmate death at Athens-Clarke County Jail

The death of an inmate in the Athens-Clarke County Jail has prompted the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to look into the matter.

At around 10:49 a.m. on July 8, jail employees found a 31-year-old black male unconscious in a housing unit, according to the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office.

According to Keith Sims of the Athens-Clarke County Sheriff’s Office, jail staff notified medical personnel and started life-saving procedures right away. After arriving, EMS and the Athens-Clarke County Fire Department carried on with the resuscitation. At a nearby hospital, the convict was declared dead in spite of their efforts.

According to the sheriff’s office, calling the GBI in for these kinds of investigations is regular procedure.

There are currently no new details available.

This year, the Athens-Clarke County Jail has seen at least two fatalities. An inmate passed away at the hospital after being discovered unconscious in his cell in April.
