Prepare your shopping list by gathering lunch bags, soap, and bananas. With aspirations to reach over 2,300 locations by the end of the year, San Diego is one of the first 1,000+ cities and towns in the United States to offer same-day delivery to customers.
Amazon Delivers Fresh Food to San Diego the Same Day
Customers in over 1,000 cities and towns can now get fresh food with Same-Day Delivery, according to an announcement made by Amazon on Wednesday. Amazon is adding thousands of perishable food items to its current logistical network, which is already streamlined for speed and efficiency, making this one of the company’s biggest supermarket expansions. Along with millions of other products already available for Same-Day Delivery on Amazon.com, including electronics, fashion, home and garden, produce, dairy, meat, seafood, baked goods, and frozen meals, customers will be able to order these things.
The new service offers a large range of local and national brands, including organic and natural options, at low pricing for customers on a tight budget. In most areas, Prime members can get free same-day delivery on items over $25. Any order under that amount is subject to a $2.99 charge. Regardless of order size, non-Prime members can use the service for a $12.99 cost per order.
Doug Herrington, CEO of Worldwide Amazon Stores, stated, “We’re always coming up with new ways to make grocery shopping easier, quicker, and more economical for our customers, especially Prime members.” We’re giving clients a quick and simple experience by adding fresh groceries to our Same-Day Delivery service. With just one cart, they can get milk and electronics, oranges, apples, and potatoes and a mystery book, and frozen pizza and equipment for their next home renovation project. Everything will be delivered to their door in a matter of hours.
Customers welcomed the convenience when Amazon started offering Same-Day Delivery for perishable goods including bread, ice cream, milk, eggs, bananas, and bread in cities like Phoenix, Arizona, Orlando, Florida, and Kansas City, Missouri. They now return twice as frequently as those who don’t buy fresh food, many of whom were first-time Amazon grocery buyers. Initial findings also demonstrated the appeal of foodstuffs among Prime members, with avocados, bananas, honeycrisp apples, limes, and strawberries rounding out the top 10 perishable grocery items in Same-Day Delivery orders. Strawberries are now routinely in the top five best-selling products, surpassing AirPods. The extension currently includes cities including Columbus, Ohio; Tampa, Florida; Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and Raleigh, North Carolina.
Customers have found out how much we’ve made online grocery shopping easier after experimenting with this service for sporadic products, Herrington continued. You can get cookware for same-day delivery, for instance, but you can now add everything you need for Grandma’s chicken soup, including the chicken, noodles, stock, fresh vegetables, herbs, and even bowls to serve it in. Simply place your order with what you need, and we’ll take care of the rest. Customers are turning to Whole Foods Market and Amazon Fresh for even more of their grocery needs because they love online grocery delivery so much.
Fresh and high-quality delivery of perishable groceries is guaranteed by Amazon. Before delivery and upon arrival, its temperature-controlled fulfillment network performs a six-point quality check. To maintain proper temperatures, temperature-sensitive products are transported in recyclable insulated bags, which are also utilized for delivery from Whole Foods Market and Amazon Fresh.

Amazon has been establishing the benchmark for pricing, speed, and selection across millions of products for over 25 years, and it is now extending that dedication to grocery. More than 150 million Americans already shop at the corporation, which in 2024 brought in over $100 billion from sales of groceries and household necessities (excluding Whole Foods Market and Amazon Fresh).
The service enhances Amazon’s current grocery delivery offerings, which include Whole Foods Market, Amazon Fresh, and neighborhood specialty and grocery stores. Consumers have the option of same-day convenience shopping, which mixes everyday goods with fresh food, or entire grocery hauls. Through 2026, Amazon plans to keep bringing this capability to other towns and cities. Among the numerous perks of Prime membership is Same-Day Delivery of fresh goods.
