Geoff Duncan, the former lieutenant governor, declared in an editorial in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Tuesday that he has joined the Democratic Party.
Charles Bullock, a professor at the University of Georgia, suggested that Duncan’s official conversion would be interpreted as an indication that he no longer believes in the Republican Party, a sentiment that other moderates might find appealing.
Trump supporters won’t be affected, but he said that people who still consider themselves Republicans but find it difficult to support Donald Trump or candidates who are clearly closely linked to him might take inspiration from Geoff Duncan’s actions.
While still identifying as a Republican, the former lieutenant governor actively supported Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris in 2024 and denounced President Donald Trump.
As a Republican, Duncan was elected lieutenant governor in 2018 and did not seek reelection in 2022. He was expelled at the start of this year by the state Republican Party.
