Former Democratic state House leader announces bid to be Georgia’s attorney general

(Recorder of Georgia) Bob Trammell, the former House Minority Leader, declared on Wednesday that he will be the first Democrat to compete for Georgia’s attorney general position next year.

Trammell, an attorney in his hometown of Luthersville, formally announced his campaign on Wednesday after previously filing paperwork to explore it. Trammell is going to run for statewide office for the first time.

According to Trammell’s campaign statement, “the only way to bring about real change in Georgia is to take on the special interests and cynical politics that are holding us back and fight for what’s right.”

He continued, “Georgians deserve someone who will fight for them every day at a time when we are feeling the pressures of an unstable economy, corporate corruption, sneaky frauds and scams, and the erosion of our rights.” Georgia is worth fighting for, that’s all.

In 2014, Trammell, a former member of the state House, was elected to represent a district in rural west Georgia. In 2017, he succeeded Stacey Abrams as House minority leader. He remained in office until 2020, when Republicans made a significant effort to unseat the top Democratic leader in the House.

There will be a number of unfilled statewide positions on the ballot next year as incumbent Attorney General Chris Carr, a Republican who has held the position for almost ten years, steps down to run for governor.

Two state senators, Bill Cowsert and Brian Strickland, have already begun their campaigns for attorney general on the Republican side of the contest to succeed Carr.

The attorney general serves as the state’s main law enforcement official, advises the governor and state agencies on legal issues, and speaks on behalf of the state in court.

A wave of lawsuits contesting the activities of the Trump administration are being filed nationwide by Democratic attorneys general. Carr frequently led or participated in litigation contesting the actions of the Biden administration prior to Trump’s reelection to a second term.
