After a months-long investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, a former Cornelia lawyer is now facing many criminal charges.
On August 4, agents arrested Paul Jason Jake York, 46, and charged him with two counts of unauthorized practice of law, four counts of identity fraud, ten counts of first-degree forgery, and two counts of theft by deceit.
The accusations follow the Mountain Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office’s request on February 18 for the GBI to look into a possible forgery case involving York in Habersham County. Investigators found York had produced and falsified court documents, the GBI said.
York was taken to the jail in Habersham County. He was previously imprisoned in 2020 on comparable accusations. York was charged with faking the signatures of a local prosecutor and judge during that probe. Two counts of first-degree forgery and willfully filing fake documents were brought against him.
This most recent inquiry is still ongoing. After it is finished, the case will be sent to the District Attorney’s Office of the Mountain Judicial Circuit for prosecution.
