According to San Diego Magazine’s annual top of San Diego Awards, Fleet Science Center is the top museum.
The honor, which is determined by reader and critic votes, honors exceptional organizations in the area. With only one vote permitted per category and record-breaking participation in this year’s awards, the Fleet’s pick among the nine museum nominees is particularly noteworthy.
The Fleet group said, “This award reflects the passion of our visitors and the dedication of our partners.” We are able to further our goal of introducing everyone in San Diego to the potential of science because of this community.
Over 26 million people have visited the Fleet Science Center since it opened in 1973, and it has grown to be an essential component of the area’s science education scene. With more than 100 interactive displays and the only IMAX Dome Theater in Southern California, the center never stops encouraging curiosity and a passion for STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math).
Despite having its headquarters in Balboa Park, the Fleet’s influence extends much beyond its boundaries. Through immersive learning and mentorship, initiatives such as BE WiSE (Better Education for Women in Science and Engineering) expose girls to STEM fields. In the meanwhile, Fleet on the Go makes science accessible in every community by bringing interactive exhibitions to libraries throughout the county.

According to CEO and President Steve Snyder, the Fleet has expanded into a county-wide organization, beginning with its home in Balboa Park. Our team’s dedication to making science interesting and accessible to all in the area is reflected in this award.
The Fleet is getting ready for a thrilling new chapter as a result of the acknowledgment. As part of the Science Starts Here capital campaign, which intends to improve displays and increase chances for experiential learning, renovations are set to start this fall. Throughout the renovations, the museum will be open and welcome visitors to observe the changes as they happen.
