Firefighter overcome by heat while battling house fire

While fighting a fire west of Cleveland, a White County fireman experienced heat-related problems that led to his hospitalization early Thursday.

The fire started in the 100 block of Staton Road at 12:47 a.m. on July 31. A bystander reported the incident to E-911, stating that the building looked to be an abandoned house, according to White County incident Services.

The first person on the scene was a sheriff’s deputy. They discovered that the two-story house’s front porch was completely engulfed in flames, and the fire had spread to the surrounding foliage.

Firefighters from Cleveland and White County went into the building to search and fight the fire. According to officials, when they arrived, about half of the house was on fire.

After being assessed by White County EMS, the firefighter was sent to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Habersham and subsequently released.

Lumpkin County Station 7 offered mutual aid, and the county’s CERT Rehabilitation Unit helped at the scene. The cause of the fire is still being looked into.
