FAA awards $15M to San Diego Airport’s Quieter Home Program

The Federal Aviation Administration has awarded $15 million to the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority’s Quieter Home Program to provide aircraft sound insulation for 250 eligible homes near San Diego International Airport.

The funding comes from the FAA’s Airport Improvement Program (AIP), which supports airport infrastructure nationwide. SAN is one of 18 California airports selected for this round.

“We are grateful to receive this funding for our Quieter Home Program,” said Kimberly Becker, president and CEO of the Airport Authority. “It allows us to continue working with nearby communities to reduce interior noise for eligible homes.”

Eligibility for the program is based on FAA criteria. Homes must be located within the 65-decibel or greater noise contour around SAN and have an average interior noise level of 45 decibels or more with windows closed. Affected neighborhoods include Loma Portal, Ocean Beach, Bankers Hill, Middletown, Golden Hill, and South Park.

The Quieter Home Program follows a multi-step process to evaluate and install noise-reducing improvements, which may include sound-rated doors and windows, air conditioning, and weatherproofing. Treatments vary by home.

Since its launch in 2001, the program has retrofitted 5,929 homes.
