Early skateboarding legends to be honored by California Surf Museum

Some of the pioneers of skateboarding in the 1960s and 1970s will be honored on Saturday by the California Surf Museum.

An occasion hosted by the North County Veterans Association of OceansideEight skateboarders will be honored on Saturday with the Silver Skater Award, which is given by the museum to skateboarders who have significantly influenced the culture, development, and support of the skateboard community and whose example has inspired others.

According to Jim Kempton, executive director of the California Surf Museum, surfers were skateboarding at the start of the 1960s when the waves were flat. At the time, when interest in skating and surfing surged, skateboarding was the boom within a boom. A breakthrough in one influenced and improved the other.

The purpose of this event is to commemorate those early years by paying tribute to people who made it possible long before skateboarding and surfing became Olympic sports.
