In order to change the state constitution and give lawmakers the ability to redraw their election districts, Governor Gavin Newsom on Thursday called for a special election on November 4.
Carl DeMaio, a member of the California State Assembly, responded by promising to launch a campaign to overturn the plan at the polls as part of his Reform California movement.
According to DeMaio, California Democrats are using Trump as a front to push a crooked and dishonest plan to abolish the Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission, a nonpartisan method for drawing election districts, and terminate free and fair elections in our state.
DeMaio warned that if this legislation is approved, the independent Citizens Redistricting process will be permanently destroyed. This is a clear attempt to rig elections by letting politicians select voters instead of letting voters select politicians.
DeMaio underlined that state officials fiercely fought the citizen effort put forth by California voters in 2010 that specifically stripped politicians of their redistricting authority through two initiatives that were adopted by the electorate. By giving map-drawing authority back to the politicians that people claimed they couldn’t trust, Newsom’s proposal would undo that.
DeMaio promised, “We think we have a comprehensive plan to stop Gavin Newsom’s assault on democracy through this partisan redistricting scheme, and I plan to spend every day fighting it.”
In addition to gathering one million signatures to qualify for voter ID, DeMaio said in a news release that the 10,000 volunteers he has enlisted throughout the state to gather signatures for the CA Voter ID Initiative will now be asked to harvest ballots with NO votes against the redistricting plan.
