Clarkesville finalizing U.S. Army contract for work at Camp Merrill, Fort Benning

During Monday’s June 7 city council meeting, Clarkesville’s city council addressed an intergovernmental agreement with the U.S. Army.

According to City Manager Keith Dickerson, the Army has a program that gives local governments contracts to renovate military sites. According to him, the city of Clarkesville won a proposal for work at Fort Benning, which is close to Columbus, and Camp Merrill, which is close to Dahlonega. Possible tasks include cleaning the camp’s washers and dryers, mowing the grounds, and collecting trash.

“You’re essentially just using a contractor to fulfill the requirements, and then you’re the middle man making a little bit of money doing it,” Dickerson said, acknowledging that it’s outside the typical scope of city business.

According to Dickerson, if the contract is carried out, the city may get around $50,000 annually. He anticipated that while the washer and dryer maintenance might not be included, work might start in August.

According to Dickerson, the washers and dryers are where the real money is. and I desire that part of it.

Dickerson was unable to provide an estimated time of arrival for the Army’s final certification of the work contract.
