Chula Vista to expand free, reduced-cost shuttle service

According to city officials, Chula Vista Community Shuttleservice will extend into southwest Chula Vista.

For locals, especially elderly citizens and underprivileged communities along the Interstate 5 corridor, the on-demand service aims to improve mobility, connectedness, and equity.

The new service area will be formally launched at the South Chula Vista Library, 389 Orange Ave., by Mayor John McCann, city council members, and other partners. Tuesday’s event starts at 11 a.m.

According to a news release from officials, the enlarged shuttle footprint enhances accessibility to important neighborhood locations like grocery shops, major shopping malls, the South Branch Library, and all three San Diego Trolley stops.

It will continue further down Third Avenue, reaching south to Anita Street and west to the bayfront, providing access to inexpensive housing complexes and inhabitants of several mobile home parks, including six senior-focused ones.

By adding the Palomar Trolley stop, the extension is expected to connect locals to more extensive transit alternatives, such as the Blue Line and major bus lines, giving them access to downtown San Diego and the border between the United States and Mexico.

The California Energy Commission and the California Air Resources Board’s Clean Mobility Options program have provided $1.8 million in multi-year funding to help fund the community shuttle, which provides free service to people 55 and older and inexpensive rides to those 18 to 55.
