A 59-year-old man tried to elude an examination at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry, and three U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers opened shot on him, the agency reported Tuesday.
At approximately 9 p.m. on Monday, the unnamed suspect allegedly attempted to drive toward a gate at the north end of a lot in order to avoid a secondary border inspection, but it was blocked. The San Diego Police Department said that when he proceeded toward the south end of the lot, he nearly collided with cops.
According to the department, the CBP agents retaliated by shooting the subject. Police said the suspect surrendered after shots were fired; he suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital by paramedics.
According to the department, the three unnamed policemen have 22 years, 6 years, and 2 years of service experience.
After arriving on the site, the SDPD Homicide Unit began looking into the event.
According to a statement from the SDPD, the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office will review the homicide investigation once it is finished to see if the officers are criminally liable for their actions.
