Busy Cornelia intersection reopens after gas leak contained

A gas leak this morning forced the closure of a prominent intersection along one of Cornelia’s main thoroughfares for almost two hours.

Shortly after 10 a.m., a construction worker damaged a gas line, prompting authorities to close the intersection of Level Grove Road and the US 441 Bypass. At the time of the event, the contractor was installing a new water line.

Jonathan Roberts, the Cornelia Police Chief, told Now Habersham that Atlanta Gas Light arrived quickly and contained the situation.

Traffic had to be rerouted around the impacted area while workers fixed the leak.

Just before noon, police reopened the intersection. According to Roberts, no local businesses were shut down.
